It has been a while since I’ve posted on the blog. Normally I don’t really feel the need to, since we’ve had twitter and the UserCP updates. But I suppose this proposed change needs some explanation, and thus the blog post.
I’ve been discussing this with Dman for a while now, following complaints from a few users about the default 5GB storage being too low; we still have the paid upgrades system planned, just that it being a structural change means it will take a little while longer. So, in the mean time, here’s what we’re proposing:
The current system will be altered to a time based storage system. Every user on the system will have their storage space increased to 15GB by default, from the current 5GB. However, the downside to this will be an expiry time. Files older than 6 days will be deleted automatically.
In the future, when we release our paid upgrades, users will be able to ’secure’ this storage for a small fee. And they will also be able to buy extra storage on top of the 15GB default, which will also be secured. Secured storage space will not be subject to the 6-day expiry time.
This proposed change will only be implemented following a majority vote. So if you would like to see it being implemented, and don’t mind the 6-day expiry period, please cast your vote below. If you have any comments, you can use the comment form

You have my support on that!
I myself almost never need to redownload the files from the HDD downloads, i only use it as a required proxy for filesonic links. so 15Gb storage with 6 days expiracy, is a fair trade to me!

Hi Hamza!
I really think the 15gb is really a great upgrade. Well for someone like me that has great download speed I can totally agree with the 6-day hdd file expiration. I’m really looking forward to the new hdd system implemtation. Thanks so much guys! At long last we are not just stuck with the 5gb limit

Could we not have it that they get removed after being fully downloaded once?

Well at the moment we have no way of identifying whether an HDD link has been fully downloaded by the end user or not, so that’s not an option. I believe the 6-day expiry rule is pretty fair. You can transfer to HDD only as much as you think you will be able to download within the 6-day time period.

Could you have options, so either you choose 5gbs with unlimited time, or 15gbs with the 6 days.

As of this moment, unfortunately no. We might be able to implement that when we implement the paid HDD system. If the proposed change goes into effect right now, it’ll be a very simple system based mostly on a scheduled job. The actual, full programming for the backend will take place sometime in May (which is when we’ll also roll out paid upgrades and such).

I agree! It’s a very good idea.

The proposed set of upgrade/changes as enumerated is a good way forward with the service, IMO. It has my vote and support.

Regardless of what you will do, I have nothing against it, because I do not usually leave the files for longer than 1-2 days >.<
Let's see what others have to say

sounds good to me.

5Gb storage with 6 days expiracy, sounds good to me.

15 gig is plenty, and 6 days to download your files is plenty as well.Bring it on asap.

Seems fair to me, i only use it for Filesonic and for links not generated properly, but I think most people will like having the 15 gb to work with, since you can download 15GB in one day.

Wonderful idea , especially for those who download large file , like xbox game or blu-ray iso .
6 day left them plenty of time to download they file

Any idea on how long the poll will be active and if the majority vote remains on changing to 15gb, when that might happen?

Feels like it’s only me that disagree with the upgrade
For a user that has slow internet connection, i could really make a use of that 5GB storage.
Well life goes on.. with the expiry coming, i’ll need to find other premium service.

Fine! Go for it.

I like the idea of more HDD space. Could you also put either a date or days to expiration column in the My Downloads list to help us keep track of what’s going on?

I didn’t even know about this till you sent out the e-mail today =P
this will be a good update. although, now that fileserve links no longer require downloading to the hdd, it’s not so vital to my downloading. will surely be nice for any filesonic stuff though.
nice to see you guys continuing to implement good changes for your users =)
I really haven’t had any significant issues in quite a while (hence the drop in ticket spam)

I agree on this one too!

Yes, it is a good idea.
Keep the good work

I’ve been waiting this moment…:))

When’s the changes coming up?

To me, I don’t need the HDD system at all. My question to the system admin is why links from filesonic is downloaded to HDD? Why can’t it be like any other links from other file-hosts? All I need are the generated links so I can proceed to download as soon as the links are generated rather than having to wait for the files to be downloaded to the HDD area before I can start downloading.
